General notes:
Grading as at 1985 : APeriod : Mid Victorian 1883, 1885Grantee : J Huggins 1866William Donovan, a cartage contractor, owned these five row houses from their construction until at least 1895. His own residence at 16 Wood Street was built in 1883 and the others followed in 1885. He then leased them to people whose occupations were varied e.g. a painter, Daniel Beaumont; an engine driver, John A Miller; a civil servant, R.J. Collier. A native son of Limerick, Ireland, William Donovan arrived in Australia in 1860. After operating as a carrier for ten months, he went to New Zealand for four years and returned to convert his horse cartage business into a prosperous concern of twenty two drays [Victoria and its Metropolis p 719]Parapetted, two-storey stuccoed brick row houses with two-level, intricately patterned, cast-iron verandahs and iron fences. Drip moulds cover the doors and the paired lower window openings, whilst other ornament includes the arched parapet entablature, stepped parapet cornice and brackets to verandah dividing walls. Slightly differing ornament and entablature shape exists on 16. Notable features include the fence; verandah decoration; verandah roof and structure;Architecturally, of a common type, but near original and well ornamented examples, which contribute to a valuable streetscape: of high regional importance. Historically, associated with a prominent personality from the type of industry which thrived in the area: of local importance.
