General notes:
Building type: ResidencePeriod; Date: Edwardian; 1920History: The land was purchased at a Crown land sale in 1864. The present house was constructed in 1920 by F L Morton, for Esther and Edgar Morton at a cost of £1,250. The rate books show that the seven-room house was occupied by Edgar morton, and was rated at £110. By 1946, the house was rated at £160, and was owned by John Wertheim, and occupied by Edith Beresford. By 1966, and J & M Breen were the owners and occupiers, and the property was rated at $1,000. By 1982, the house was owned and occupied by Sally Clemens.Description: The house is a single-storey late Edwardian / inter-War brick house on the corner of Adams Street. The main elevation to Adams Street, has a central arched entrance beneath a small gable. The lower walls, possibly originally of face brick , have been painted, while the upper walls, above a moulded string course, have a roughcast render finish. Beside the front entrance is an unusual asymmetrical chimney breast; above the eaves line, however, the chimney stack has been demolished and replaced with a short flue. The gabled roof is clad in unglazed terracotta tiles and has small terracotta finials on the gable ends.Significance: The house is of local historical and aesthetic interest. Historically, it is representative of the style of residences which were constructed in large numbers throughout South Yarra in the inter-War period. Aesthetically, the house is reasonably intact and incorporates a number of typical Arts and Crafts elements including rendering and a terracotta tiled roof.
