General notes:
Grading as at 1985 : DPeriod : Early VictorianCastle Hotel, formerly known as the Edinburgh Castle Hotel. An early Victorian building, renovated in 1924.A two-storey corner hotel, typical of the hostelry of inner Melbourne in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. with a bar and separate lounge facilities provided on the ground floor and spartan residential on the first floor. The 1924 upgrade is most prominent in the amended parapet form and bracketed entry awning features, but overall the building retains the majority of the nineteenth century form.Small local hotels are a feature of the inner urban area of Melbourne. Often these occur on corner sites where there will be greater exposure for the bar functions and greater opportunity to access light in the residential rooms above. The hotel is prominent in the 5 way intersection and the contemporary development on other corner sites reinforces its historic form.
