When they reached the landing at the top of the stairway the firemen made the first of a number of alarming- discoveries, which convinced them that the outbreak was a matter for police investigation.. -Lying across the banister, railings were three battens on which had -been placed in a precarious angle so that it could have been easily upset, a tub containing about eight gallons of petrol. Apparently to prevent vaporisation, a sheet of glazed paper and a towel- were placed over the tub,- and bundles of Chinese joss sticks .and matches - were tied together.: -A piece of -string had been fastened around the basin,- and was left dangling over -the -stairway steps. This remarkably,-ingenious device was fortunately discovered by Station Officer Patterson, of Eastern Hill; before any of the firemen could stumble on the string and bring the tub and its inflammable contents pouring: on to the landing.. The matches and .the joss sticks had been ignited, and had scorched the- towel- lying underneath. Had the tub of petrol been overturned by some unsuspecting fireman he. and- others following behind him on the narrow stairway -might, have been enveloped in a sheet of flame, with perhaps tragic consequences. -:Continuing their investigation the fire men,- -proceeding- cautiously, made an inspection of .the first floor. On the floor just inside the door of a bedroom on- top of the landing was a receptacle filled: with petrol. As in the case of the tub, it was covered over with paper, and on the top of it were a towel, joss slicks and matches. Under the bed was another receptacle -containing petrol, and: also covered with a piece of paper. The seat- of the blaze was located in a front bedroom, the interior of which was a mass of flame. After extinguishing the fire the firemen completed their survey. In the adjoining bedroom they found that a jug, which was standing in a basin- on the wash stand, was filled with petrol. It was covered -over with paper; and there was a towel, joss slicks and matches on top of it. A piece of- string was tied to the handle of the jug, and -the other end was attached to the handle of the door the wash stand being within a few inches of the door. The fireman who opened the door was splashed by the petrol from the jug. Petrol-soaked rags were also found in an ice chest in the kitchen downstairs. The fire was confined to- the bedroom on the first ; floor, where it apparently had its origin. Every window on the ground and first floor of. the building, including a man-hole had been left opened- The result was that the flames were whipped up by the draught and would have spread rapidly but for the timely arrival of' the brigade. The cafe was unoccupied when the fire men arrived..DIRECTORIES OF VICTORIA, MELBOURNE-SANDS AND KENNY, SANDS & MCDOUGALL1893264 Stewart, J.
