Possible builder problems meant St. Kilda builders, Smith & Crawford replaced C C. Fewster half-way through the first, with Smith & Crawford continuing with the second stage. The Boyes Brothers occupied 219 well into the 19505 with only a few other constants in the row. For instance, 217 held a Greek Club from the 1930s to 1950s, (Macedonian fraternity, first floor), but in the early 1930s it housed the Communist Party Club. 1 In 1920 Hiram Phillips made whips there and James Williams offered sanitary plumbing and gas fittings. 2 There was also a Greek Club in 215 (Democritus league, first floor) and tea rooms in 213 (the 'Roxy' in the 1950s and Richard's in the 1930s). Enid Boyes, Alice Jones and Phyllis Wheeldon shared the ownership in the 1940-50s.DescriptionA three-level stuccoed conservative Italian Renaissance revival row, with arched and segment-arched fenestration, string. impost and cornice mouldings. Although the shopfront at 219 is metal-framed (copper) it resembles the typical shopfronts of the era. with original stone piers at the sides, also street verandah fJXings are still visible along with the probable Boyes Brothers business sign in has-relief at the first string mouldExternal IntegrityUpper level colour sympathetic (213-217), all shopfronts except 219 replaced, upper level awnings added which cover architectural features on 213-217 also ground level awning at 217, signs generally, and potential removal of parapet detail. The name Telis has been added, presumably during one of its Greek occupation periods.StreetscapePart of a cohesive 19th and early 20th century commercial streetscape, once more unified by continuous street verandahs.SignificanceA plainly ornamented warehouse row which has a long association with the Boyes Brothers (219 particularly) ironmongering business and has housed Greek clubs over a long period, in company with other Greek cafes and clubrooms to the south (205-211 Russell Street) 4. It is also part of a cohesive 19th and early 20th century commercial streetscape.Contributes to precinct.GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYBUILDING IDENTIFICATION FORM_________________________________________LEWIS, M- AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE INDEX:Records73107 Fewster, C C - 29 Farmer St Richmond 5/11/91 Smith & Crawford - Carlisle St St Kilda 3/1/92 Boyes, John Melbourne VIC Warehouse Askew, David; 1891 11 573108 Smith & Crawford - Carlisle St St Kilda Boyes, John Melbourne VIC Warehouses Askew, David; 1892 01 4;_________________________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1989, LITTLE BOURKE STREET PRECINCT CONSERVATION STUDYStatement of Significance_________________________________________VICTORIAN HERITAGE INVENTORY H7822-13411866 - building on site. 1888 - 2 storey building. 1891 - 3 storey warehouse built for John Boyes of the Ironmongery firm, Boyes Bros., which occupied # 219 into the 1950s._________________________________________City of Melbourne online maps (COMMAP)Tetis Building:Three of a row of four, three storey rendered brick former warehouses with three ground level shops.
