General notes:
Grading as at 1985 22-B, 24-D, 26-C, 28-C, 30-DPeriod : Mid Victorian 1889Grantee : J West & Co 1863Mrs. Gidney, of the prosperous local family of horse dealers, owned and leased these properties from their construction in 1889 until at least 1896. Among her tenants, who were in general, professionals and businessmen, was William H. Webb, an architect of some note. This suggests that there was some possibility of his having designed these row houses.Single storey, single-fronted row houses of polychrome brick, with transverse gabled and slated roofs and iron picket fences and verandah decoration. Statue niches are set at each side of the window, the chimney shafts are vermiculated and bracket pairs, panels and rosettes decorate the eaves entablature. Of note, is the palm at 24 and the colour scheme of 22. Notable features include the fence; verandah decoration; verandah roof and structure; chimneys; elaborate/high standard design of cement rendered surfaces.Architecturally, of varying importance, given the low integrity of some of the row but overall a potentially good example of relatively uncommon row house form with rich stucco details, a raised podium siting and contributive to a streetscape: of high regional importance to local importance only. Historically, another development by the wealthy Gidney family of horse dealers, near to their Canning Street properties: of regional importance as evocative of this area's 'monarchy', created by its own particular industries.
