General notes:
GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1991 : DPeriod : Mid Victorian (1881)Grantee : T Stevens 1852History- Before these shops and residences were built in 1881 by Peter Wilson, the land was occupied by a series of smaller wooden dwellings.Wilson, who was probably a Solicitor of Sydney Road, North Melbourne, owned these buildings until at least 1895 and rented them out to shop-keepers who sold various wares e.g. Charles Beechenow, a butcher; James Simpson, a grocer (1885-1895); and Griffiths the boot dealer. (Refer Errol Place).Description- Four, two-storey stuccoed brick shops and residences with gabled parapets, triple light upper windows and the Corporation-pattern iron street verandah. The acroterion at the parapet apex, the gable and the other chaste but unusual stucco decoration imply a Greek revival influence.Integrity - The upper windows have been replaced in 29; the street verandah has been removed on 25 and the others altered, 25 is also covered with intrusive painted signs which obliterate details; and all shop fronts have been changed, 31 possessing a sympathetic shop front (c1920) .Streetscape - Contributive part of the Errol Street commercial precinct, matching 61-7, 51-3 and 39-45 Errol Street.Significance- Architecturally, of architectural distinction because of the subtle use of mouldings and the unusual, for the period, parapet-shape, however of intermediate integrity. It is part of a cohesive commercial streetscape: of regional interest.Historically, occupied by some Errol Street traders of note (Griffiths): of local interest.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1.
