General notes:
Grading as at 1999 : DPeriod : Early Victorian (1870)These two shops, originally known as 10-12 Victoria Street, first appear in the 1870 rate book, described as a pair of 'unfinished' five-room brick shops, each valued at £50, with no owner or occupants listed. The next year, the owner was identified as William Allee, and the occupants as Thomas Bramston, auctioneer, and James Wilcock, engine tuner. They were soon succeeded by George Blakely, a compositor, and Israel Glance, a tailor. By 1875, Glance occupied both buildings, operating one as a tailor's shop, and the other as a tobacconist. He later retreated to number 10 (now 253) and number 12 (now 254) became occupied briefly by William Foxton, picture dealer, an then by James Opie, a carpenter. The two shops remained occupied by Glance and Opie respectively until the mid 1890s.They are a pair of double-storey, nineteenth century rendered masonry shops. The first floor is divided into two bays by rendered pilasters, and has two pairs of windows obscured by advertising hoardings. The parapet has a dentilated cornice. The appearance of the building is marred by excessive painted signage. The shopfronts have been altered. They are of local historical and aesthetic interest. Erected in 1870, they demonstrate an early phase in the commercial development of the area. Aesthetically, the shops retain typical Italianate details including pilasters and a dentillated cornice.you'd like to give more feedback or ask a question, please contact us.
