General notes:
Grading as at 1985 : CPeriod : Early Victorian 1866Grantee : Allison and Knight 1852Estate agent Robert Clegg owned and occupied this house from 1866 until he sold it about 1880. From then on it was leased by its several owners to such tenants as William Goldsworthy, a jeweller and Phillip Brodie, a draper.Originally part of a row house pair (434-6) this is a hipped roof, two-storey stuccoed brick house with a two-level timber verandah. Although altered, the house possesses uncommon elements from its construction i.e. guilloche pattern timber balustrading, the border-panelled upper level glazing and the pierced upper bressumer. Notable features include verandah decoration; verandah roof and structure; timber balustrade; timber verandah frieze.Architecturally, an altered, relatively uncommon row house form (hipped, common roof) with unusual details reflecting the pre-cast iron era of building, of regional interest. Historically, second oldest of a housing group in a dominantly commercial area, possibly influenced by 454-6 Victoria Street in its early location there: of local importance.
