General notes:
GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1985 : B (20) C (22)Period : Edwardian (1908)Grantee : T Watts 1853History- In 1908, Mr. Redmond Pomeroy of Ascot Vale, a partner in the flourishing local timber firm of Bowen and Pomeroy (Refer 24-6, 28 Lothian Street), had these houses built as an investment in 1908.Description- An unusual gabled-parapet pair in face red brick and rough-cast stucco which follows a Medieval stylistic theme in contrast to the preponderance of those derived from the Italian Renaissance in the study area and inner Melbourne generally. An oculus vent is centred in each rough-cast gable, corbelled brackets support the gable cornice from brick bands which simulate half-timbering. Bullnose verandahs, with slatted friezes and turned posts are from the period, but derive in part from Oriental beginnings, whilst the arched niches are Classical in nature. Cast-iron pickets follow the stair and podium verandah lines to provide a form characteristic of the study area. These may have been designed by George de Lacy Evans.Integrity - The brickwork of 22 Lothian Street has been painted and part of the verandah balustrade removed; 20 is near original.Streets cape - Part of a concentration of gabled, parapet rrn1 houses, (20-32 Lothian Street) presumably linked with the sane developer-architect combination and sharing~ characteristics, evolved from the hill side site.Architecturally, reinforced by 24-8 Lothian Street, these houses exhibit well the short-lived adoption of Medieval styles for dwelling rows and thus are superior examples of unusual building type: of high importance. Historically, significant as a development area by the North Melbourne timber merchants, Richard Bowen, later Bowen and Pomeroy.Recommendations –• Remove paint from brickwork and stucco of 22 by approved method;• repaint trim in typical or original colours;• restore iron pickets to verandah of 22:• consider zoning provisions to maintain residential use and form.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory; BW=Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works property service file)1.
