General notes:
Grading as at 1999 : DPeriod : Early Victorian 1873These buildings, formerly known as 210-212 Victoria Street, first appear in the rate books in 1873 as two brick shops, each of five rooms and valued at 54 pounds. The shops were owned by Mr A White, a draper, who occupied No. 500 and leased No. 498 to G Yelland, a hairdresser. The buildings replaced two small wooden shops, one of which was also owned and occupied by White. It comprises a pair of double-storey, nineteenth century shops, constructed of rendered brick. The roofs are concealed by stepped and curved parapets with moulded cornices and consoles. The original shop front to No. 498 is intact: that at No. 500 has been altered. The verandah to No. 500 has been reconstructed. At first floor, the windows are tripartite, with timber-framed double-hung sashes, and each is surmounted by a triangular pediment. They are of local historical and aesthetic interest. Erected in 1873, they demonstrate an early phase in the commercial development of the area. Aesthetically, the shops are typical of the somewhat restrained and refined architectural style of that time; of particular note are the distinctive first floor windows. They are interesting elements the nineteenth century commercial streetscape.
