Later he worked making packing cases for McCrackens Brewery, then in Collins Street sometimes walking to work from his home in Essendon where he, his wife and four sons and one daughter lived. He later commenced his own business P. Clark in the Carpentry I joinery in King Street. In about 1911 he purchased a block of land 595 -597 Lt. Lonsdale Street, Melbourne from a draper in Smith Street. Collingwood. After erecting the surrounding foundation he stood in King Street stopping the Horse Drays carting the soil from sewering Melbourne offering the drivers two shillings… to put the filling on his block. Next he purchased all the Silicone Bricks at a factory in Fisherman'S Bend from a firm going out of business, and eventually erected a single storied Building. By that time he was employing his two sons and other joiners. In 1921 he borrowed the sum of fifteen hundred pounds … to put on a second story. The method he used was to Jack up the existing roof to enable the bricklayers to extend the walls part by part each time increasing the height of the roof. P. Clark Pty., Ltd was then a registered company - Carpentry Joinery Shopfitting. In 1925 Peter Clark visited Scotland and on the way back met a man coming from Denmark to work with the butter industry. P. Clark then commenced making butter Churns and Dairy Machinery for many years. In 1933 Peter Clark died, but his two sons Robert and Frederick wore to carry on the business. Before Peter Clark died he was to purchase the small building next door giving the property an island Area. The small building was at one time used by Elliotts of soft drink fame then as a collection point for Papers and Clothing for Baby Health centres. As time progressed Robert's son also Robert and Frederick’s Daughter Estie (Mrs White) became equal partners in the business and Building with Estie's husband taking an active part on her behalf. The front of the small building was accidentally demolished by a truck and a new front was erected. In 1983 the business was closed having outlived its involvement with the families and the building was sold to David Syme ('The Age') they are at present using it for the storage of machinery. The above is a brief history of one man’s ambition to own his own business and building and the story of an early building.__________________________________________________LAWRIE WILSON AND ASSOCIATES, 1977.
