GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1991 : CPeriod : Early Victorian (1870)Grantee : C S Ward 1865History- William J. Butters, a butcher, had these two timber houses built in 1870 on land purchased from S G King and he occupied 72 during 1870. In 1880 they had been purchased by John Nichol, a carpenter, who lived off a nearby row and owned these houses until after 1895. They were occupied by tenants with a variety of occupations, many of which no longer exist i.e. George Lacey (timekeeper), Michael Harrison (striker).Description- Pair of gabled timber row houses with scalloped and pierced barge boards and timber verandahs. Spade-head timber pickets have been recreated at the frontage.Integrity - Generally original.Streets cape - Contributes reriod variety of materials and scale to the Molesworth Street residential precinct, matching 68-66, 86-88, and relating to 70 and 68, at the rear.Significance- Architecturally, they represent the timber housing for which North Melbourne has intended (as outside of the Building Act) and the 'Gothic' inspired picturesque motifs of the period which were relatively uncommon compared to the Classical style and masonry dominance of row houses: of regional importance. Historically, speculative housing: of local interest.Recommendations - repaint in original or typical colours.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1.
