General notes:
Grading as at 1999: DConstruction date: 1885The shop and residence at 225 Abbotsford Street is a double-storey nineteenth century building of rendered masonry construction with a parapeted roof. A moulded string course extends across the façade above the ground floor, terminated by semi-circular capped corbels at either end. There are two windows at first floor level with segmented arched heads and bluestone sills. The original shopfront has been removed and replaced by four semi-circular arched openings. The parapet has a moulded cornice with consoled corbels, surmounted by a scrolled segmented arched pediment. It is of local aesthetic and historical interest and is representative of the type of commercial buildings constructed during the nineteenth century Boom period, a significant phase of the development of North Melbourne. Also of some historic interest is the fact that the building operated as a saddlery for almost fifty years. Although the shopfront has been altered, the overall form is largely intact, and survives as a typical example of late nineteenth century Italianate style commercial architecture.
