General notes:
Grading as at 1999 : DPeriod : FederationThis building, formerly known as 270-72 Victoria Street, first appears in the Sands & McDougall directory for 1916 as a 'shop being built'. Its first occupant was S J Marshall, identified as a manufacturer. He was still there in 1920, identified then as a manufacturing chemist. By 1930, the building was the MUF Society Dispensary, operated by Arnold Littlewood. This business continued to operate from this address, under Littlewood, until as least the 1950s.It is a double-storey, double-fronted, bichromatic brick Edwardian shop and residence with a Victorian terraced form. The roof is hipped and clad in corrugated galvanised steel. The balcony at first floor, set, between brick wing walls, has a cast iron frieze and balustrading: unusual for the Edwardian period. A partly glazed timber-framed door opens onto the balcony, and has side and highlights. The adjacent windows are timber-framed casements, also with highlights. The ground floor shopfront has been altered, but appears to retain some early, or possibly original, features. It is of local historical interest, being a late example of the Victorian-style shop-with-dwelling-above typology. The transitional Victorian/Edwardian character of the building remains largely intact at the upper level, so the building is an important part of the overall historic commercial streetscape.
