WhiteHistoric Summary: James Sinclair is a distinguished Scottish landscape gardener who migrated to Melbourne in 1854 and in 1856 was appointed to plan and plant the Fitzroy Gardens. Hundreds of today's trees were planted with his own hands. In 1866, Melbourne City Council accepted the tender of Thomas Crowson to build this cottage for Sinclair, who had commenced to live in the Gardens in 1860 in order to attend to night watering.
