General notes:
Building type: Former Hilco Transformers FactoryPeriod; Date: Inter-War; 1935History: The completed building first appears in the Sands & McDougall directory for 1938, occupied by Hilco Transformers Pty Ltd, a firm of transformer manufactures. this company continued to occupy the building until the late 1950's, when it was taken over by Repco. the building has since been occupied by a number of businesses similarly connected with the automotive industry.Significance: The building at 97 Berkeley Street, Carlton, is of local aesthetic and historical interest. It is one of numerous buildings in the vicinity that were originally erected for, and are still occupied by, businesses connected with automotive industry. As such, the building demonstrates a particular pattern of commercial and industrial development that had characterised this part of Carlton much of the twentieth century. Aesthetically, the building is a good and intact example of the inter-War Art Deco style. its distinctive psychoanalytic brickwork has, unusually, managed to escape subsequent overpainting.Intactness / Condition: GoodIn current picture business name known as VABCO Clutch & Brake (Automotive Industry)
