General notes:
Grading as at 1999: Upgraded from E to DPeriod: InterwarThe former McKenzie Mill complex first appeared in the Sands & McDougall directory of 1924, listed as 'James F McKenzie and Co, coffee merchants'. It remained occupied by McKenzie's company for many years, although the nature of the business apparently changed several times. It occupies an entire block, bordered by Arden, Dryburgh, Lothian and O'Shanassy Streets, comprising of a prominent four-storey red brick warehouse at the rear, with a lower section facing Arden Street. The two street elevations of the warehouse are divided into narrow vertical bays by giant order pilasters that extend throughout all levels. At the top of the building, the pilaster strips have mould brackets which support a heavy cornice, which, in turn, is surmounted by a rendered parapet which conceals the roof. The bays articulated by the pilasters and rendered spandrels, contain large rectangular steel-framed windows. They are of historic and aesthetic interest. Built in 1923, the building demonstrates the type of industrial and commercial development that has typified North Melbourne since the nineteenth century. The building retains associations with flour manufacturer and wholesale grocer James McKenzie, whose company still continues to this day. Aesthetically, the building is typical of the stripped classical commercial style of the 1920s. The once adjacent silos have been demolished, but the bulk of the warehouse building forms an important streetscape element which is demonstrative of the industrial activity which proliferated in the area.
