General notes:
GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1991 : CPeriod : Federation (1913)Grantee : P A Sinclair 1852History- The name of Grigg occurred frequently around North Melbourne and it was Joseph Grigg who had these houses built in 1912-13 as a rental proposition. In its early history, 139 was leased to Mrs. Annie Clack, wife of Alfred Clack, the butcher, (refer to 433 Abbotsford Street) and subsequently was operated as a boarding house, by Mrs. Eleanor Telford. 141 Errol was leased to such people as James Moore and Mrs. Theresa Berry.Description- A late Italian Renaissance derived pair to two-storey arcaded row houses of unpainted stuccoed brick with a balustraded, parapetted roof line and balcony. Masonry arches are supported on cast-iron columns and iron pickets comprise the fence. Parapet urns and acanthus leaf brackets provide further detail. 141 has a side entrance to Scotia Street.Integrity - Generally original.Streetscape - Although constructed later than most of the Errol Street commercial precinct, the 19th century form adopted matches adjacent buildings and provides, by the original wall finish, an example of their formerly unpainted stucco finish generally used.Significance- Architecturally, although in original condition and competently designed, it is late for its style and is of interest because of its retention of unpainted stucco, a once universal wall finish: of regional significance.Historically, another investment property, on this occasion associated with the locally prominent Grigg family.Recommendations• Clean stucco as required by approved methods;• repaint/maintain joinery in original colours:• consider zoning provisions to maintain original use and form.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)T.
