Thomas Fahey was the owner of this lot by the late 1840s and Edward Corbett in the 1850s. John Stratton held the lot after default on a mortgage in c1867.1John Henry Hughes' widow, and later James Hughes, owned this warehouse from its construction, in the 1880s, through to at least the First War. It was possibly built in conjunction with a Market Lane warehouse which backs onto this building. Hughes' property at 212-220 Little Bourke Street (q.v.) was also rebuilt in the 1880s., both sites being improved after his death.4Tye Shing, a cabinetmaker (eventually next toTye & Co.'s large furniture warehouse at 93-97 Little Bourke Stree), appears to have occupied it for at least 20 years of this century, while other cabinet makers, such as Hop Shlng & Co. occupied it in late last century. Mahlstedt's 1887 Plans show it linked to a 'Cabinet Work Shop' in Market Lane (see 26- Market Lane). One non-joinery use lay with Quong Yet Lee, a general storekeeper in the early 1890s, (later Cook Shop), also Sun Kim Lee, c1887. It was 'storage only' in 1940, becoming Munon Cafe, twenty years later.6DescriptionA three-storey facade in two colours of brick, laid in English bond. Openings are arched with cemented keystone (possibly sandstone) and moulded white or fancy bricks are used to provide cornices and string moulds in the generally austere elevation. A similar but altered upper elevation can be seen in Market Lane.External integrityGround level replaced totally, signs added, air unit added.StreetscapeRelates to the two adjoining (altered) warehouses.Significance:A typical, late 19th Century factory-warehouse., with minor architectural distinction but always occupied by Chinese cabinetmakers and, hence, representative of their long occupation of this part of the city. It is also part of a streetscape.Contributes to precinct.Notes:1 RGO SN14472 FB1888. 228 NAV £100: RB1885.224 NAV. ₤303 Mahlstedt & Gee. Standard Plans (1.1888)4 .see Mahlstedt & Gee.
