These are to be replaced by a huge reinforced concrete building which will be known as McEwan House.Plans have been prepared, and the contract has been let. The new structure will be 132ft. high- the maximum allowed by the building regulations-and will contain 68,000 sq. ft. of floor space. Taller than Collins House, near which it will stand, it should be one of the landmarks of the city. The site lies between the main premises of James McEwan and Co., which front on Elizabeth street, and Equitable place, and it occupies from 343 to 349 Little Collins street. It is 78ft.wide, and 133ft. deep. There will be a basement and 11 floors, including the ground floor. Messrs. McEwan and Co. will occupy the basement, ground floor, and first floor, totalling 25,1100 sq. ft. and the remaining floors will be let as office and showrooms.Special provision has been made in the plans to render the building fireproof. In accordance with modern principles every floor will be separately proof against fire. The plans have been underwritten by the Fire Underwriters' Association. The contract has been let to the Reinforced Concrete and Monier Pipe Construction Co. Pty. Ltd, but the price is not disclosed. The whole building is set down to be completed by October, 1925, but the lower floors are to be ready for McEwan and Co.'s occupation by November. The architects are Messrs. Stephenson and Meldrum, and Mr. C. S. Steele is the consulting engineer. Dean's oil and colour store will be transferred to the opposite side of Little Collins street.1925HENRY HARE and HARE,Architects, Consulting Engineers,McEwan House, 343-343 Little Collins Street,.Advert.We Have Space To Let .….Buildings Large and Small Areas.ORIENT LINE BLDG 2- Collins streetHARLEY HOUSE 71 Collins streetSELBY HOUSE 318 Flinders laneSUSSEX HOUSE 533 Flinders-laneLEROY HOUSE 116 Flinders lane.RUSSELL HOUSE 454 Flinders-streetPEACOCK HOUSE 485 Bourke streetMcEWAN HOUSE, 251 Little Collins streetCYCLONE BLDG 459 Swanston streetLTD.https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/2070796Registered Teachers' Association…The council has arranged to lease premises in McEwan House, where the association will have twice as much room as at present, and where special arrangements will be made for the convenience of members.…..1925https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/146181423THE TRIUMPH OF SUCCESS.How Gvatter's Institute MarcelleHas Grown. So rapid have the proprietors of Gvatter's Institute Marcelle found the growth of their toilet business, that they have been compelled to leave their premises at 9 Collins Street, and secure much more commodious ones. They have been most fortunate in obtaining a large suite, right in the heart of the city, on the second floor of McEwan House, in Little Collins Street....1925, 1931...Advert.PERMANENT WAVE and SHINGLEEXPERTSSkin SpecialistsConsultations and Advice Free'Phone: Cent.
