General notes:
Grading as at 1999 : DPeriod : Early Victorian 1872These shops, originally numbered as 198-2-8 Victoria Street, first appear in the rate book for 1872, described as a row of 6 five-room brick shops, each valued at 40 pounds. They were all owned by C H Willison, and all were described as 'empty' except for the shop at the far east end of the row (now No. 486), which was occupied by John Phipp, an estate agent. By 1875, the six shops had been acquired by a Mr Hellicar, and were occupied by a hairdresser, a dyer, an engineer, two butchers and a bootmakerIt comprises a row of six nineteenth century double-storey shops and residences, all altered in the twentieth century. Except for a rendered moulded string-course which divides the two storeys, all of the original cement rendered decoration has been removed from the first floor. The windows have been replaced with timber-framed double-hung sashes with horizontal glazing bars. The ground floor shop fronts have also been altered. Cast iron verandahs survive at Nos. 486, 488 and 490.They are of local aesthetic and historical interest. Although remodelled during inter-War period, the overall nineteenth century form and fenestration pattern of the building remains apparent. The buildings demonstrate the wave of commercial development that occurred in Victoria Street during the nineteenth century Boom period, an important phase in the development of the suburb. Despite their alterations, the row is an important element in the nineteenth century commercial streetscape.
