The site was formerly by a store on land 29 feet 4 inches by 66 feet 6 Inches which was bought out of the J. 'B. Watson estate at auction last June for £1509, or equal to about £153 a foot.A branch of the Melbourne Savings Hank is also to be established a: the west end of Flinders street, which on account of the increasing volume of wharf, railway, and fish market trade, is rapidly becoming one of the busiest quarters of the city. The Commissioners feel that a savings bank branch is urgently needed there to suit the convenience of wharfside people and railway men even under present conditions; but when the Market street branch is closed, consequent upon the completion of the Central Bank in Elizabeth street, the necessity for a bank in Flinders street west will become imperative. The Commissioners have, therefore, purchased from Messrs Bartram and Son a two-story bluestone store in the block between King and Spencer streets, on land 31 feet 6 inches by 95 feet, for £5125, equal to over £162 a foot. It is believed that with necessary alterations this building can be transformed into a well-equipped banking house. The price per foot shows a reasonable approximation to that paid by the Bank of New South Wales for the King Street corner, bearing in mind that the latter's purchase has less depth, and that the old buildings on it had to be demolished to make room for a new structure. The question of what is to be done with the old Savings Bank in Market Street has not yet been decided. The building is a handsome one, and may be taken over by the State, which already owns the land, at a valuation. The Home Affairs department of the Commonwealth is making urgent inquiries round the town for new premises, but, unfortunately, the Savings Bank Commissioners will not be able to give up their present building before Christmas, as they will have to wait until then for the completion of the Elizabeth street bank.1912First Land Sales and Bank purchasehttps://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/132992656
