The 1925 building was designed by architects Stephenson & Meldrum in the interwar Commercial Palazzo style.__________________________________________________Cross-sectionDec 1967For this new building at 119 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne, archts Meldrum & Partners designed precastconcrete sun hoods over all windows. The separatearticulation at each window and between floors, togetherwith careful attention to weathering of horizontalsurfaces, leads to good shadow patterns and willprobably allow the building to acquire a patina of citydirt without looking shabby. The small scale elementsand rich modelling almost reduce the facade from apattern to a texture so that what could have beentermed aggressive detailing turns out to be almost self effacing,in a most agreeable way.
