He passed away on 8th inst. at Mt. St. Evin's private hospital. Much sympathy has gone out to the bereaved widow, who, at Bendigo, Bairnsdale, and Melbourne, has hosts of friends, being always ready and willing to assist in every charitable work. The late Mr. Mahony was a member of the Catholic College committee, and was amongst the most generous donors, subscribing £500 to the fund. The deceased gentleman was 67 years of age, and a native of Melbourne, and since his retirement from the police force, seven years ago, he had taken no active part in public life.He joined the mounted police in 1873, and was almost immediately appointed to the criminal investigation branch. As a detective he soon came into prominence, as, in addition to his capacity for elucidating crimes and arresting dangerous criminals, he was regarded as being the fastest runner amongst the police in the metropolis. In 1894 he was appointed to the rank of inspector, and took charge of the Gippsland district, where he remained for five years. Eventually he was promo ted to the charge of the Bourke district, and as a superintendent in 1900 he was sent to Bendigo in charge of the North-Western police district. In 190J= he was appointed to the position of inspecting superintendent, which is next to the rank of chief commissioner, and during the subsequent four years he frequently acted as chief commissioner in the temporary absence of , Mr.. T. O'Callagan. He retired on a superannuation allowance in September, 1908, and since then had resided with his wife at 'Weeroona" St. Leonard's-avenue, St. Kilda. As a justice of the peace, he invariably occupied a seat on the bench at the St. Kilda police court. Mrs. Mahony has received a sheaf of letters and, telegrams, including a most kind letter from his Grace the Arch bishop of Melbourne, and one from his Grace the Coadjutor-Archbishop of Melbourne. - The Lord Mayor and1 the Lady Mayoress ' visited Mr.. Mahony whilst at Healesville, where . he, with Mrs. Mahony, had. gone in search of health. He returned to his home, St. Kilda, and was attended by Drs. Devine and Murphy. After an' operation at St. Evin's, he gradually sank, the end being most peaceful. A number of officers and ox-officers of the police force, as well as numerous personal friends, attended the funeral on Monday. A short service was held in the, Church of the Sac red Heart, St., Kilda, after which the cortege moved to the Brighton Cemetery. Those present- included the Mayor of St. Kilda (Councillor J. H. Hewison)., and other councillors. The Lord Mayor of Melbourne (Alderman Sir David Hennessy) was represented by his son, Mr. Norman Hennessy. The pall-bearers were Messrs. P. J. Dwyer, P.M., A. G. Sainsbury (Chief Commissioner of Police), Superintendent M'Manamny, Councillor E. O'Donnell (St. Kilda), Councillor levers (Melbourne), ex Superintendent Brown, ex-Inspector Cahill, and ex-Inspector M. 'J. Ward. At the graveside the rector, the Rev. W, Ganly, officiated. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of John Daly. R.I.P. Funding for digitisation contributesee also The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957)Monday 10 May 1915 - Page 8.
