RESEARCH ADDED BY GRAEME BUTLER 2022:__________________________________________________Period: VictorianDATE: 1882-3;ASSOCIATIONS: Davies, M H (of Davies & Price, solicitors);DESIGNER: Henderson and Smart;BUILDER: Goss & Masson.GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYBUILDING IDENTIFICATION FORM cites source 80,p143;__________________________________________________REID, KEITH & JOHN R, 1976, MELBOURNE CBD STUDY AREA 7 (source 80)BUILT: 1883 (2)ALTERATIONS: False ceilings internally but the majority of the internal detailing and partitions appear original.DESCRIPTION: 4 storey Office building built for Nr. M. H. Davies.CONSTRUCTION & MATERIALS: Brick walls with rendered facade. Timber floors.CITYSCAPE RELATIONSHIP: The building is of vital importance to the Bank Place precinct.RECOMMENDATION: Retention of facade essential. )CHRONOIOGY: J1882M. H. Davies owned the site which contained six iron workshops apparently located in some abandon all over the site. The only occupier listed was Chas 0 Boyle1883Brick offices unfinished.1884The new building, owned and occupied by Mr. Davies contained 72 rooms. He remained in ownership until 1894 when the Commercial Bank acquired the property, but he continued to occupy the premises till after the turn of the centuryDESCRIPTIONInternally the building has a wide central corridor with glazed partitions and doors opening onto it. The entry has a boarded, shallow vaulted ceiling with cream marble tiled walls. False acoustic tiled ceilings have been installed in the passageways.ARCHITECTURAL ANALYSISNormanby Chambers could be compared to the Felton Building (7-11 Queen Street), the latter being more decorative, transparent and refined. Both have comparatively large glass areas and confident mullions.RECOMMENDATIONThe building plays a very important role in closing off the vista from Bank Place with a facade of disciplined interest. It must therefore be considered an integral part of the Bank Place Precinct.__________________________________________________Lewis, M.
