General notes:
Period: EdwardianConstruction date: c1916History:The houses at 34-36 Gower Street were constructed c.1916. They are first listed in the Sands & McDougall directories in 1916, when the occupants were William Davis and Hannah Sinclair respectively..Description:The houses at 34-36 Gower Street comprise a pair of detached, single-storey, weatherboard Edwardian cottages with hipped and gabled roofs. Both houses have projecting gabled bays and a recessed side entrances. The houses have suffered varying degrees of alterations. No. 34 has been reclad with artificial brick cladding and has a decromastic tiled roof. The non-original flat-roofed verandah has timber posts, and the original windows to the projecting bay have been replaced by steel-framed windows. No. 36 is clad with weatherboard, and has a corrugated galvanised steel roof. The bullnose verandah, which appears to be recent, has turned timber posts and cast iron decoration, and the windows to the projecting bay are a pair of timber-framed double-hung sashes with non-original timber shutters. The fences - pickets at No. 36, and woven wire at No. 34 - are not original..Significance:The houses at 34-36 Gower Street, Kensington, are of local historical and aesthetic interest. Historically, the houses represent the architectural development of the area in the Edwardian period. Aesthetically, the houses are reasonably intact representatives of the type of small Edwardian cottages which were built in large numbers in Kensington in the 1910s.
