General notes:
Style: Classical revival/ Art DecoPeriod: Inter-WarConstruction date: 1928Notable features: A cantilevered canopy separates the main elevation of this elegant building into two parts which receive different quite stylistic treatment. The upper level features render mouldings and unpainted brickwork in a classical design reminiscent of the work of the English architect John Soane. Here three rendered arch openings with steel framed glazing are flanked by two smaller rectangular apertures in slightly recessed bays, set under a heavy moulded render cornice, unpainted brickwork parapet and restrained central ornament. The section under the canopy is reminiscent of public hotel design. It is covered with glazed tiles and has three simple rectangular openings with architraves of Art Deco influence giving access to the hall. Substantially intact, this building is architecturally interesting and gains social significance for its association with the Queen Victorian Market.
