MELBOURNE : { AREA 1} WITH MURPHY, JOCK, FOR HISTORIC BUILDINGS PRESERVATION COUNCIL7.65241-243 Flinders Lane -Bible SocietyConstruction Date: 1898Architect: Frank StapleyBuilder: R. StockdaleOne of the old buildings which was destroyed in the devastating fire of 1897 in the Flinders Lane and Degraves Street area was Edgerton & Moore's Printing and Stationery Warehouse. It was said to have been the oldest printing office in the Colony of Victoria.A contemporary building journal described the new building which Mr. Chas. Edgerton had erected as `…commodious premises in harmony with the surrounding warehouses … at a cost of ₤3250 …Of the many buildings totally destroyed during the late fire, this is the first to be entirely rebuilt … The design and plan of the building reflect great credit on the architect’.Special water service for fire extinction was included in the building and the first floor was designed with steel girders to support the printing machinery. This little building is of considerable historic interest to Melbourne, since it was here that `Table Talk’ was published for many years, when the firm was known as Fergusson & Moore. The Flinders Lane front is described as `….successfully treated and carried out in a free classical style, with Malmsbury bluestone base and semi-octagonal columns to ground floor, and red brickwork with enriched cement dressings above; the whole surmounted by a pedimented entablature and an arcaded balustrade, the total height from the pavement being 65 feet. Of the many buildings being totally destroyed by fire, this is the first to be entirely rebuilt.’An additional floor has been added to the building, thus destroying the balustraded parapet and pediment which formed part of the original design.1.
