Watson of Kew, designed by Thomas (?) Watts and built by Henry Lockington of Carlton.1 Long term tenant, the pawnbroker Loel Harris (177) eventually became the owner prior to 1920.2 Other tenants were more transient, with the exception of Henry Glaser, clothier (183) and R. Simpson & Son, artificial limb makers (181).Similarly, shop types were diverse: a servants office in 179, a ham and beef shop in 181, surgical appliance makers in 183, a washing machine maker in 179 (1885) and the Reliance Herbal institute at 179, around 1912.3 Loel Harris also diversified after absorbing 179 in the late 19305: lvan Loel started a retail musical instrument business soon afterwards.4Contributes to precinctDescriptionThese provide conservative Renaissance revival, two· storey cemented elevations to Lonsdale and Russell Streets., addressing the corner with a splayed wall face. Internally, the shop/residence configurations make the most of the two street elevations, in contrast to the original layout of the next Lonsdale-Exhibition Street corner (231-9 Exhibition Street).Ornament is typically comprised of a cement cornice, architraves, impost and string moulds all in the stuccoed vernacular typical of the 1870s-80s, but today more evident outside of the central city. Street verandah fixings are evidentExternal integrityNew ground leve1 and added canopies, colours sympathetic but sky sign obtrusive.StreetscapeA major traditional corner element, reminiscent of when much of Melbourne city resembled it. Adjoins and opposes other 19th, early20th century commercial buildings to form a streetscape.SignificanceTraditional commercial corner building of the conservative classicism typical of the 1860s to early 1880s which has long Jewish associations, corresponding with adjacent sites in this part of Russell Street also part of a cohesive 19th and early 20th century commercial streetscape.Contributes to precinctNOTES1 BA8447. 22/7/1880: DIRECTORIES OF MELBOURNE- SANDS & MCDOUGALL (D) 1881: see 1880 panorama shows as one storey2: MUNICIPAL RATE BOOK (RB) 1920, 513f.3 D1885-19504 D1939-D1950___________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYBuilding Identification Form___________________________Victorian Heritage Inventory H7822-13451866 - building on site. 1880 - 1 storey building. 1888 & 190 - 2 x 2 storey buildings.___________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1989, LITTLE BOURKE STREET PRECINCT CONSERVATION STUDYStatement of Significance___________________________LEWIS, M- AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE INDEX73086 Watts, ;Watson, J B Melbourne VIC Shops Lockington, Harry - 48 Drummond St 1880 07 22 8447 -MCC registration no 8447 [Burchett Index].
