Inspections of the rate books would possibly lend towards supposing 1870 as this is the first date that one tenant is occupying a warehouse adjacent to another warehouse (the two-storey circa 1854 building - previously elaborated on). However, this conclusion is not borne out by 1871 photographs which give no indication of any three-storey warehouse off Heap Court.Further investigations will be made in an attempt to establish a construction date. This building has been used by many businesses, including Coopers the hardware merchants. In 1914, this building was being used as a store by Coopers while the small building adjacent was a blacksmith's shop.ARCHITECTURALA building very much in the mould of other Heap Court buildings, this is a three-storey store with shallow arched door openings and regularly spaced window penetrations. The lower corner has been rounded off in heavy masonry with the brickwork corbelling out to establish the line of the upper two floors. Simple bluestone sills do not project excessively, leaving the weight and scale of the building the dominant feature to the pedestrian/spectator on Heap Court. The lifting pulleys and cables are still in position. The interior floors of the building are revealed as one large space, however there is some evidence on the upper two floors of non-load-bearing partitions having been removed. The stairs (timber) are in a very worn and dilapidated condition. The ground floor level connects through into the adjacent two-storey warehouse.ANALYSISThere are many warehouses in Melbourne possessing more intricate detailing and many would be older. However, this building has a special ministry to its precinct and is the largest structure within the area itself. The building is very typical of simple warehouse structures and is a most economical form of building.RECOMMENDATIONThis report would state that this building is worthy of registration - .through its domination of the Heap Court precinct and the fact that without this building in the position it occupies, Heap Court ceases to be an enclosed court and much of the unfolding drama of the court shape is lost.__________________________________________________LEWIS, M- AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE INDEX:Record 74847 Twentyman & Askew; Cooper, John Melbourne VIC Warehouses Cooper, John - 191 Elizabeth St 1887 10 4 3077 MCC registration no 3077 [Burchett Index].
