The former site of the McEwan machinery stores. It was purchased by James Angus Munro in 1910. Mr Munro's company, Jas A Munro & Co, was a manufacturer of bedding and wire mattresses. In 1906 the business expanded and entered the motor car trade, imorting Clement-Bayard cars from France. Expanding further, and on this site, the company became involved with motor-body construction. At the time of purchase of this property the company was conducting busiess around the corner at 493-503 Elizabeth Street. In 1932 the site was cleared and the present buildings were built in conjunction with the property at 143-151 Therry Street. The site is still owned by the Munro family. A. Munro - and Company, whose are situated at the corner of Elizabeth and Therry streets, -and ex tend through to Queen street.Messrs Munro and Company are agents for a number of motor-cars, including- the Clement Bayard, two French makes, the “Mors” and the 'Bayonet,' the Italian ..”SCAT', the Belgian 'Imperia' and Sprlnguel, and the British cars “Crossley,' 'Wall,' and 'Karricr.'At both the All-Australian Exhibition and the Agricultural Show, this torn has interesting exhibits. At the Exhibition they are showing a Crossley car ot the latest type, with a stream-lined torpedo body with bulged sides, the whole being entirely Australian-built. The exhibit includes also some patent G.R.G, shock absorbers and two small Wall tri-cars, one - of which is fitted as a delivery van suit able for n. butcher, baker or other tradesman, while, the other has ii neat body -to. accommodate two passengers. A further display which is attracting a good deal of attention takes the form of an exhibit of spare parts, including wire gear wheels, crank shafts, and so on. At the Agricultural Show, Messrs Munro and Company are well represented in Stand No. 7 with a very striking display. There is an exceedingly handsome 13 h.p. Crossley car a make which has a reputation as a hill climber, which is almost- as widely known as the name of the Crossley gas engine. A machine which is calculated to attract and to hold the attention of the roving eye is a single- seated 15 h:p. 'S.C.A.T.' car, ' fitted with a special 'self-starting device and detachable wheels. An interesting feature in connection with this- car is that.the necessity for a tyre pump has been done way with; the tyres being inflated -from the engine by means of a very -simple device. Its beautiful finish is the most striking characteristic of another car— the silent-running 12-15 h.p. French 'Mors.' The well-known' French Clement-Bayard line is represented by an 8-9 h.p. model, which has been specially built to the order of Dr. J. H.. Johnson; and also by a 15-20 h.p. 6-cyllndcr car. Then some, heavy commercial vehicles are shown, notably a 1.1/2 ton Harrier chassis; fitted , with a body built especially to- suit .the requirements of;. a fruit-grower.- A- separate show-- exhibit Includes a number of springs, pulleys, tree pullers, and forest devils.- -All of- these things have -been constructed at the company's works, which, including offices and show rooms, cover 2.1/2 acres of ground. Very -interesting to the visitor are the work shops connected with the motor-body building Industry- Those shops are conveniently arranged on the ground floor, so that a. chassis can be taken to the engineer's shop, tested, tuned, and sent on to the body builder, who constructs the framework of specially- imported timber, passed through to the panel-heaters, the smiths, the vyce-men until It reaches the large and specially-built dust-proof varnish room, heated with radiators. In the main workshop; -may be seen motor car bodies of all descriptions, from the- small, single-seated body designed for the well known Clemont-Bayard Volturette, up to the luxurious double- seated torpedo -body-which is fitted in the long 18-h.p. Imperia chassis, and even to a large bus, which is being built for a 5.1/2 tons Karrier chassis. On the premises are also manufactured the well-known patent C-R-G. shock absorbers, wire mattresses, buffer , springs, tree pullers and forest, devils,The premises are situated near.the Victoria Markets, and -the enterprising Mr Munro has taken advantage of this fact, and Intends to build 40 shops facing Queen and Therry streets which should greatly assist In relieving -the present congestion, which Is so 'annoy ing to stallholders at' the markets..1945https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/1094195BIG FIRE IN CITY Engineering Works Destroyed Within a few minutes of an outbreak of fire in the premises of Jas A. Munro and Co, Rex Engineering Co, Munro Cold Store Proprietors, of Therry st, near Victoria Market, city, about 11.30 last night, the entire building was enveloped in flames, which reached a great height. All city fire brigades fought the flames, which threatened nearby buildings, until they were brought under control about midnight, but little could be done to save the burning building or its contents. At intervals gas cylinders exploded when the flames made contact with them. Huge sparks fell among the many hundreds of spectators attracted by the flames.
