Grading as at 1983 D2, 1985 C2Period : Mid Victorian (1882)Grantee : B Isaacs 1872___________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNE.History- The first owner of this house built in 1882 was the coach builder George Grigg. He owned this house and 103 Courtney Street until c1893, renting this property to a number of skilled and unskilled workers, such as William Mills, an upholsterer, Robert Cooper a billiard ball maker and Sydney Baker, a labourer. By 1895 the Australian Widow Fund was listed as the owner.Description- A two-level face brick row house with a hipped iron-clad roof, two level iron verandah and iron picket fence. Ornament is sparse, consisting of masks and brackets.Integrity - The brickwork is painted; the verandah bressumers and roof fascia, all altered,Streetscape - Connected to and almost part of 103; being built by the same owner and sharing its role as a dominant corner pair in this residential streetscape.Significance - Architecturally, in its altered condition this has a low architectural importance, although it possesses a slightly uncommon row house form (hip roof) and assists in the streetscape: of local importance.Historically, another development by a horse-trade-allied personality.Recommendations - Remove paint from brickwork.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1. James Wright and' Company, Australian Wharf, deposed that he saw a timber jinker lying in the yard at the wharf in December last, it was missed, and he subsequently saw a portion of it at a wheelwright's in Hotham. James Wright, timber merchant, gave similar evidence, and said he valued the jinker at £7. George Thos. Fined L2 or one month.J. Crawshaw was charged with uttering a forged order for £5 7s, on Fitzgerald Brothers. On the 10th Inst, prisoner called at the shop, and got clothes to the value of 35s. He presented a cheque for £5 7s, bearing the signature of George Grigg. The latter stated that the prisoner had been in his employ for 107 days, and had been drunk 87 days of the time. The plaintiff was in defendant's employ, and some high words passing between them during lunch hour on the 23rd March, the plaintiff was said to have threatened to throw a billy of hot tea over the defendant. Thereupon the latter ...ed the plaintiff, who is a somewhat infirm old man, with his fist. There was medical evidence that the plaintiff had had a rib broken, and sustained a severe shock. For the defence witnesses were called to show that the plaintiff was the aggressor, and that no assault had been committed.
