General notes:

Grading as at 1999: upgraded from E to D.Period: Early Victorian.The North Star Hotel was a double-storey building of rendered masonry construction. Typical of late nineteenth century hotels, the corner was splayed, the roof concealed behind a parapet and windows were timber-framed double-hung sashes. The nineteenth century appearance of the building was been obscured by inter-War additions, which include the addition of horizontal streamlined string courses, rendered decoration above the window heads, and semi-circular pediments containing starburst motifs. The ground floor was clad in brick. The original bluestone stable, first mentioned in the 1866 rate books, was at the rear (east) of the property, and had been remodelled as a toilet block.The North Star Hotel was of historical and aesthetic interest. Construction of the original hotel was associated with the early period of the development of Hotham during the mid-nineteenth century. The subsequent inter-War alterations were of interest as they demonstrated the considerable wave of redevelopment and refurbishment of old hotels that occurred during this period in Melbourne. The existence of the stables was of historic importance, demonstrating the facilities required to be provided by hotels of the time (ie mid-nineteenth century).This building, including the stables, has been demolished.
