McDonald - Hosier Lane..GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYStatement of SignificanceHistoryThe construction of Her Majesty's Theatre east of this site in 1884 generated a need for set and costume storage which appears not to have been met until 1905, when William Pitt, J.C. Williamson's architect, designed this warehouse. The builder was R. McDonald, of Hosier Lane. Ten years later all of the brick warehouses in Cohen Place were leased by Williamson, this one being his only property. Another two brick stores were owned by the G.W. Porter Trust. This occupancy continued until relatively recently.DescriptionAn austere face brick and parapeted four storey warehouse with much of the interior character retained in its use as the Chinese museum.External IntegrityGenerally original.StreetscapeTypical of the surrounding austerity of this part of little Bourke Street, seen among buildings of all uses, but now almostisolated by the demolition of associated warehouses located on this lane.SignificanceAssociated with the renowned J. C. Williamson theatrical company and the theatre he owned, it is one of two property stores surviving in the Central Activities District (see Princess Theatre) and probably the second oldest purpose built example in Victoria, although the specific use for set storage is not obvious today. It is intact externally and relates to the industrial of the adjacent buildings and hence the Chinatown precinct..GRAEME BUTLER 1989, LITTLE BOURKE STREET PRECINCT CONSERVATION STUDYsee https://issuu.com/graemebutler21/docs/little_bourke_st_precinct_conservatcitesBA 9709 25/8/1905;Sands & McDougall Directory of Victoria 1930, 1940 not part of theatre listingLEWIS, M- AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE INDEXRecord 73307 Pitt, William; Williamson, J C Melbourne VIC Warehouses McDonald, R - Hosier Lane 1905 08 25 9709 MCC registration no 9709 [Burchett Index].
