RESEARCH ADDED BY GRAEME BUTLER 2022:__________________________________________________Period: EdwardianConstruction date: 1908ASSOCIATIONS: George Tallis, of the Princess' Theatre;DESIGNER: Pitt, W? Smith & Ogg? Tompkins, H W & F B?;BUILDER: J J Oliver.GRAEME BUTLER 1989, LITTLE BOURKE STREET PRECINCT CONSERVATION STUDYStatement of SignificanceFactory, 103-105 Lonsdale StreetHistoryBuilt: 1908Although George Tallis owned this site, it was its long-term occupier Sydney Day (printer) who applied to build `...a brick factory...' there in May, 1908. His builder was J.J. Oliver, of Queens Parade, Fitzroy, but no architect is recorded on the application. However, given the designs done for other printeries in the city, it is possible that it was Nahum Barnet. By cl940 Day's print works had given way to the .more anonymous City Service Press, although they were still the proprietors by the 1960s. Other printing works were established in Tattersall’s Lane this century,DescriptionA three-storey brick and stucco parapeted warehouse, with tall arched window elements and Romanesque revival details generally, including the entrance arch and Arts and Crafts plant motifs in the upper level arch spandrels. The parapet is severe with minor main raised entablature and flanking pepper-pot piers which descend on either side of the building elevation to the rust floor level, corbelling back into the main wall. The side elevation is near intact with a corbelled stone corner, limber window joinery and squint sills.External IntegrityGenerally externally original, but recently renovated where colours relating 10 the period have been applied to joinery and cement work. Ground level window sills (similar to side elevation) have been lowered to ground level (1987).StreetscapePart of a similarly fenestrated and scaled warehouse elevation which extends to the west as far as 117.Significance:Architecturally a typical Romanesque revival style of the period. Still, it possesses valuable foliated ornamentation and in near original condition. It is also symbolic of one of the later furniture warehouses in the area's long association with that activity..GRAEME BUTLER 1989, LITTLE BOURKE STREET PRECINCT CONSERVATION STUDYcites: CITY OF MELBOURNE BUILDING PERMIT APPLICATION 857, 2/5/08; RB 1909-10,.362DIRECTORIES OF VICTORIA, MELBOURNE, SANDS & MCDOUGALL 1940, 1920, 1962.GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYBuilding Identification Form.LEWIS, M- AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE INDEX76384 Day, Sydney - Printer Melbourne VIC Factories Oliver, J J - 54 Queens Parade Fitzroy 1908 05 2 857, MCC registration no 857 [Burchett Index].
