General notes:
Grading as at 1999 : DPeriod : Early Victorian 1867This building, formerly known as 168 Queensberry Street, first appears in the 1867 rate book as a 'brick house, shop and stables' valued at 40 pounds and owned and occupied by a Mr Murdoch. By 1869, the shop had been acquired by James Marks, who still owned it in 1900. In the 1870s and '80s, the shop was occupied by a succession of grocers including Benjamin Buswell, John McDonald, William Mann, Elizabeth Thomas and Francis Bell. In 1887, the shop became occupied by John Kain and James Thompson, printers, who were still there in 1900. In 1895, Kain and Thompson became the printers of the North Melbourne Courier and it was about this time that the parapet was added. It is a double-storey, nineteenth century commercial building. It is constructed in painted brick and has a rendered balustraded parapet with an ornate central panel concealing the roof. At first floor level, there are two non-original timber-framed casement windows with glazed highlight windows which are surmounted by triangular pediments. The shopfront has been altered. It is of local historical and aesthetic interest. It is a typical example of a nineteenth century shop with a dwelling or office area above. Its connection with the now-defunct newspaper, the North Melbourne Courier, is also of some local interest. Although the shopfront has been altered, the Victorian form of the shop is still apparent, and as such it makes a contribution to the historic commercial streetscape.
