It has three storeys, which, for the purpose of the Coffee Palace, were subdivided into three central corridors and forty rooms. The shell has been completely gutted, all the partition walls being removed, the brick walls of the corridor been replaced by steel girders. As a result Messrs Thompson, Thomas and Co., who mean to use the place as their export warehouse, will have clear storage space over the whole of each floor. The basement In the front part of the building will be utilised for cheese and butter storage, the firm doing a largo export trade to the east In those products. What was formerly the vestibule at the Coffee Palace now becomes the office, and with its tiled floor, panelled dado, and Iead-lighted windows, will make a handsome business apartment. At the rear of the building a combined electric passenger and goods lift has been Installed by Messrs. O. V. Hampton and Co.The building throughout will be lighted by electricity, and when finished will make an interesting example of how the character and use of a city structure can be completely changed from Its original purpose by a well-planned series of internal attractions,Messrs Leake Bros., of Northcote, are the contractors for the work.1931https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/171678392Both the Xavier College and "The Advocate” installations were originally made and are still maintained by the New System Telephones Pty. Ltd., of 181-183 King-street, Melbourne. That in Xavier enables inter-communication to be had instantly between the Rector, clergy, prefects, librarian, matron and the laboratory—in all there being about a dozen private telephones in use in the college. The Rector, the Very Rev. Fr.
