Period/Date: Victorian; c. 1898, alterations between 1920 and 1940History: ...designed by architects McCrae, Toole & Cuthbert in 1898. Built by Angel Brothers builders of Malvern for Cuthbert C Blackett. Rate books show Blackett was still owner in 1910...; the property then occupied by Eliza Syme. The house underwent extensive alterations c. 1920 and in 1940. By 1966, the house was owned and occupied by Miss MF McCarthy...Description:... a double-storey late Victorian Arts and Crafts style residence, constructed of red brick with a hipped Marseilles pattern terracotta tiled roof with wide overhanging eaves. Asymmetrically planned, walls at ground level are of English bond face red brickwork, while the upper level is rendered with a moulded string course at window sill level. Windows are variously timber-framed casements and double-hung sashes. A balcony at first floor level has a shingled balustrade.Significance:...of local aesthetic importance and historical interest. ...a particularly good and substantially intact example of the Arts and Crafts style, popular in the Edwardian period. Of note are the shingled balcony, contrasting render and red brickwork and asymmetrical composition. Historically, the house is representative of the more substantial residences which were constructed in South Yarra in the late nineteenth century, demonstrating the desirability of the suburb as a prestigious residential area for Melbourne's wealthy.
