GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1991 : CPeriod : Mid Victorian (1876)History- In 1885 Mrs. Ann McShane, a grocer, purchased and enlarged this shop and residence which stood beside a smaller building she owned to the south; a Mrs. Mary Hutchinson had been 131-3 Errol Street's first owner in 1876. Mrs. McShane retained ownership until at least 1895, leasing it to Charles Allison, one of the family of Joseph Allison, undertakers of Errol Street (1890) and Henry Edwards a grocer. Mrs. McShane is listed intermittently as residing in 133 Errol Street during the 1890s. Tenants of 133 included the Singer Sewing Machine Company, Mary Kennedy and Henry Edwards, grocerDescription- A two-storey, parapetted shop and residence of stuccoed brick with a timber shopfront. Ornament consists of a heavy, bayed parapet cornice; the bay extending to the bracketted window pediment and window below. A heavy string-mould separates the upper storey at the verandah line, which indicates the addition of a storey in 1885.Integrity - The street verandah and, presumably, the parapet urns are gone; the central mullion to the timber shop front is gone and the southern door altered.Streetscape - contributing part of the Errol Street commercial area; relating strongly to 135-7.Significance- Architecturally, a near original and relatively early shop and residence with an unusual bayed upper window and parapet: of local importance.Historically, linked with the important North Melbourne business family, the Allisons, and a grocer of long-standing, Annie McShane.Recommendationsreplace street verandah and urns and repaint as typical or original;consider zoning provisions to maintain use and form.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1.
