BOURKE HILL PRECINCT HERITAGE REVIEWHISTORYThe four storey factory was potentially constructed as early as 1890, with the 1895 MMBW Plan indicating abuilding footprint similar to today. It is evident that the façade underwent substantial alteration in the Interwarperiod, and was remodelled to its present state. The factory has been historically linked with garmentmanufacturing throughout the Interwar period until the 1970's.FEATURESFour storey commercial form with regularly articulated bays. The building is vertically oriented, with brickpilasters running the length of the façade. Horizontally, the building is simply articulated through decorativecream brick courses and regular steel framed windows. The pilasters are capped with corbelled bricks, with creambrick courses creating visual interest to the facade. An early shop front survives.THEMES3.1 From town to City.5.5 Building a manufacturing industry.9.1 A working class.9.3 Working in the postwar city.ANALYSISThe building is a fairly intact example of an Interwar commercial building, although there is potential that thebuilding was constructed c.1890. An early shop front survives to one of the bays and the remainder of the facadeis fairly intact. The building is linked to the manufacturing industry, important in this area and is a fairly intactexample of the Interwar commercial style. It is located within a small group of similar building (stylistically andmaterially) but the remainder of the streetscape has been heavily altered.RECOMMENDATIONSUpdate building grading to acknowledge contribution to the precinct.Grading Contributory TO Precinct.City of Melbourne MapsHarwood House:A four storey brick former warehouse with a basement.
