General notes:
Building Address: 241 Domain RoadBuilding Type: House/Flats?; Original use - HouseStyle: Arts & Crafts/Aesthetic MovementPeriod: Inter WarConstruction date: c1914 ; Source: RatebooksMaterials: Harling or rough castNotable features/Significance: Designed by Desbrowe-Annear this house has the austere appearance and careful massing of Hill House by C R Mackintosh (1902-3), Helensburgh near Glasgow, and may well have been an influence on the design. The small double hung Windows are informally but functionally placed and the composition of round bow window, parapet tapering chimney and intersecting gabled roofs is free form, and a bold arrangement of otherwise traditional elements. Portico is somewhat more orthodox and classical, relating possibly to some of Annear's later work or may be a later addition. In the house at Domain Road both the early decorative and later Modern phases of Annears work can be seen. It is an important example of his work.Alterations and Recommendations: Windows to round bay (inappropriate - reinstate original design) security door; fence and gates; pergola; bay window (inappropriate - no recommendations) carparking (inappropriate - remove)Other comments: Owned by Alfred Deakins daughter Vera 1936-1955. Brown Normanby Road Caulfield ; Alterations 1923 H. G. White (Permit 5509, 2500 pounds)First Owner: The house stands on Crown Land Portion No 21, which was bought by John Robert Murphy on 14 March 1849 for #304.The nine and a half acre allotment began to be sub-divided in September 1852 and in the following year two blocks, each measuring 50 x 187' were sold.Lot 6 was bought by George Green for #169 and Lot 5 to William Payne for the same amount. In 1855 a small wooden house was built on each of the site and they remained until the land was acquired by the MacDonald family and the present house was erected. In 1934 the house was bought by Sir Thomas and Lady White. Lady White was the daughter of Alfred Deakin. Her mother, widow of the three times Prime Minister of Australia, lived in the house for a year until her death in 1935.
