RESEARCH ADDED BY GRAEME BUTLER 2022:__________________________________________________Period: 1876-1899DATE: 1886;ASSOCIATIONS: Dawson, David plumber;DESIGNER: Uknown;BUILDER: Hollow, Joseph.GRAEME BUTLER 1989, LITTLE BOURKE STREET PRECINCT CONSERVATION STUDYStatement of SignificanceHistoryBuilt: 1886A three-story brick store was erected here for plumber, David Dawson, in 1886, by Joseph Hollow of Richmond. No architect was cited in the application to build. 10 When the building was connected to the MMBW sewer, in 1899, Dawson was listed as 'owner' and resident al 107 St. George's Road. Fitzroy.11 The Dawson family owned other leasehold sites in the precinct, but no connection to David Dawson is apparent.Dawson was the main occupier until the late 1890s, sharing the premises with the Castlemaine Paving Co. of Malmsbury, the Slone Sawing Co., and Edward Jenkins, bedstead maker. 12 A gilder, Joseph Hickman, was there in the early 1900s, prior to a long tenure by George Bray (motor tyre importer) and C.B. Fry & Co. (typewriter ribbon makers).13 Dawson's estate owned it until the mid-1940s. 14A plan made during Hickman's lease shows the building sited between Cohen Bros. furniture warehouse (q.v.) and Blakeley’s Ironmongery, forming an isolated group surrounded by large vacant allotments. Nearby were large timber mill complexes (Alcock & Co., J. Perry), depicting this part of Lonsdale Street as the light industrial fringe of the central city retailing and residential core.1DescriptionA simple but near intact warehouse design, using face brickwork presumably in two brick colours. (red and cream?) A segment-arched and cemented raised parapet entablature provides most of the facade's design quality, with string, impost and cornice moulds dividing off the rest of the facade. More subtle details are the corner brickwork regress, the 'attic' proportions of the upper level and the implied Palladian window configuration of the openings. The (unpainted) side wall appears near intact. The ground-level show-window with its dressed basalt piers is also near intact (except for painted glass and covered basement lights), being an increasingly more valuable element in the central city.External IntegrityBricks painted, some painted glazing, basement lights blocked (?), new aluminium framed doors, painted top light and added awning.StreetscapePart of a visually cohesive 19th and early 20th century warehouse streetscape, becoming a rarity in the CAD.SignificanceA well preserved typical 19th century warehouse/factory which possesses valuable ground-level details and supports a 19th and early 20th century warehouse steetscape. It also has links with the early Jewish occupation of this part of the city.Contributes to precinct..GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYBuilding Identification Form.Victorian Heritage Inventory H7822-13841880 2 storey building. D. DAWSON.SUPPOSED SUICIDE BY DROWNING.The body of Mr. David Dawson, plumber, late or Lonsdale-street east, was found yester day afternoon floating in an abandoned quarry hole situated at the corner of Berlin and Mary streets, South Richmond. Mr. Dawson left his home in Rae-street, North Fitzroy, just a week ago. Only a fortnight since his family, noticing that his. health was commencing to fail, advised him to take a trip to England, and the deceased at once booked his passage by one of the mail steamers. After proceeding as far as Adelaide he changed his mind and returned home by the overland route; but on the day following his return he again left his family, giving them to understand that he was going on an excursion into the country He never returned and as fears were entertained for his safety the police were communicated with. At about 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon two youths, named Campfield and Keogh, happened to be passing Gledhill's quarry, which abuts right on to the roadway and contains about 70 feet of water, when they noticed the body floating about 20 yards from the bank.On the matter being reported to the South Richmond police, Constable Fitzgerald accompanied the two youths back to the quarry and endeavored unsuccessfully to bring the corpse to the bank by means of ropes. Ultimately the two youths entered the water, and with some difficulty dragged the body up the steep bank of the waterhole. The only mark of violence noticeable was a deep gash in one of the arms, near the elbow, probably self inflicted. Deceased was identified by Sergeant Bell, and by one of the workmen in his employ. An inquest will be held to-day, at the morgue..Kyabram Union (Vic. : 1886 - 1894)Friday 3 June 1887 - Page 1https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/65699762SUICIDE OF A WELL-KNOWN TRADESMAN.On Friday the mystery attached to the disappearance of Mr. David Dawson, plumber, of Lonsdale-street, from his private residence in St. George's road, North Fitzroy, on the 20th inst., was cleared up by the finding of his dead body in a quarry-hole, near Mary-street, Richmond. Mr. Dawson has been in delicate health since November last, had been under the care of a medical man, and been the subject of-great care and watchfulness on the part of his family. On the morning of the 20th inst., he got up before 6 o'clock, and stated his intention to go for a walk. Mrs. Daw son persuaded him to wait whilst she made him a cup of coffee, intending to call his son to accompany him. She left the room to get a box of matches and when she came back a moment later her husband was gone, and was never seen alive again by his family. Every effort was made to trace him, the creeks and holes in the neighbourhood being dragged. On Friday a boy saw the body floating in the water in a quarry hole at Richmond, and informed the police. There is little doubt that the de ceased committed- suicide, but it is known that he was in such a state of mind as not to be accountable for his actions at the time. He had no doubt taken the train, which passes close by his residence at North Fitzroy, into Melbourne, and from thence made his way to Richmond almost immediately, as the body had been in the water for a considerable time. He had divested himself of his hat and coat before plunging into the water, and it is stated that these were found near the quarry-hole some days since, but led to no suspicion as to who their owner might be and of- the fate that had overtaken him. -The de ceased leaves a wife and five children. He was widely known and highly respected in North Fitzroy, being a prominent member of the local bowling club. He was very successful in his business as a plumber, and had recently erected a large establishment in -Lonsdale street.1917See https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/88369962
