General notes:
DERIVED FROM GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1985 : CPeriod : Victorian-era (1895)Grantee : J Banks 1865History- In 1895, George Sutton had this shop and dwelling built and proceeded to rent it to a hairdresser Aylmer Woodhead a tobacconist and hairdresser, who had previously been in Melrose Street North Melbourne. The parapet has 279, which is the original street number.Description- A two-storey, face brick and stucco shop and dwelling with a balustraded parapet, central segment-arched entablature, dentillated cornice and a pedimented upper window group of three lights. A stucco string-mould may have surmounted a Corporation iron verandah below which a two-light, timber shop front, with business and residential entrances exists. Of note is the cast-iron ventillation grille to the shop front.Integrity - Urns probably existed on the party-wall parapet piers and the shop front glazing has been painted over.Streets cape - Combines with 523-5 and 517 to provide a group from a similar period in the Abbotsford Street north precintSignificance- Architecturally, it is similar to many other shops in the metropolitan area and late for the style used, but possesses original elements which often have been altered elsewhere i.e. shop front. Historically, it is of local interest as an isolated commercial dot in a residential streetscape..Recommendations - Repaint in original or typical colours; record shop front details for restoration data..References:1.
