Fancy Goods Store,198 Litlle Bourke StreetHistoryBuilt: 1892-3A Miss B McCord was the first owner of tbis shop and residence, in 1893, the builders, Square& Hutton, having applied for a permit to build late in the previous year using a design by A. F. Kursteiner.4 McCords listed in Melbourne directories include a Miss Bessie McCord who presided over the Phoenix Hotel in Flinders Street and one William McCord of Fitzroy. 5The shop's early occupiers were the firm Sun Goon Shing & Co. selling fancy goods there from an early date, into the 1940s. Today's (1989) well known David Wang & Co. continued this line of merchandise there in the 19605.6DescriptionA two-storey stuccoed Renaissance revival elevation, with heavily moulded architraves, reeded pilasters either side of openings, a segment-arched raised entablature to the main parapet and deep bracketing to the main cornice.Ornament includes scrolls either side of the parapet entablature, a swag on the entablature itself and panels between the brackets to the main cornice. Orbs are placed on the parapet piers, blocks have foliated motifs and acanthus leaf brackets underneath, and smooth rustication has been introduced down the piers framing the ground level.Aligned, at the parapet and first floor line, with the notable adjoining 200-202 Little Bourke Street (1862), the elevation presents some contrasts such as the arched upper level fenestration and the Queen Anne inspired, squat raised parapet entablature, with its garland ornamentation.External IntegrityThe entire ground level has been replaced in an unsympathetic form, but within the pilaster frame, parts of the upper level have been damaged, but are generally original. The upper level colours are sympathetic.StreetscapeComplementary with 200·202 Little Bourke Street, providing enough classical cohesion to balance the powerful Gothic revival presence of the Mission Church, the three buildings providing an architectural and historically important group.SignificanceAssociated since construction with Chinese traders, it is historically notable but of only intermediate architectural importance. It performs a valuable streetscape role in the Chinese quarter's most significant building group.Contributes to precinctNotes:4 CITY OF MELBOURNE BUILDING PERMIT APPLICATIONS (BA) 5635. 10/10/92: Municipal rate books [RB] 1895. 3955 DIRECTORIES OF VICTORIA, MELBOURNESANDS & MCDOUGALL (D)1893-4; D1894 Miss B McCord6 RB1913-14. 324; D1962..GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYBUILDING IDENTIFICATION FORM cites CITY OF MELBOURNE BUILDING PERMIT APPLICATIONS.GRAEME BUTLER 1989, LITTLE BOURKE STREET PRECINCT CONSERVATION STUDYsee Statement of Significance.LEWIS, M- AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE INDEX:Record 73352 Kursteiner, A; McCord, Miss B Melbourne VIC Warehouses Square & Hutton - Francis St Ascot Vale 1892 10 10 5635 -MCC registration no 5635 [Burchett Index].
