Tayler.1 However, soon after, curio dealer, Elias S. Raphael, owned this and (our adjoining buildings. 2 The A.S.A. Manufacturing Co. (knitted goods) were the first occupiers, joining their existing premises to the north.] The clothing manufacturing emphasis in the lane continued into the 1950s, with Vivian Benjamin and the Direct Supply Clothing Store being the main tenants. The furniture retailers, Tye & Co. P/L, assumed ownership before 1930 and eventually occupied the building as their dispatch department in the 1950s (see 102-108 Bourke Street and 93-7 Little Bourke Street), linked to the parent store by Star Lane. 4DescriptionAustere but typical of Hudson & Wardrop's design skill, the building relies on its plane red brick surfaces and their contrast with the slender, stylized brackets which extend down from the parapet capping.External IntegrityGround level has been replaced, (not insensitively), signs added and the bricks painted (side).StreetscapePart of brick warehouse vernacular of the precinct, with side lane on south pitcher-paved and basalt kerbed.SignificanceArchitecturally, a distinctive upper level (given the use) which reflects, historically, the emphasis on clothing manufacture in this lane.Contributes to precinct..NOTES1 DP18366.1921; RB1920,1712 ibid; RB1922, 1693 D19224 RB1930, 168: RB1950,167: D1955, D1961.GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYBUILDING IDENTIFICATION FORM__________________________________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1989, LITTLE BOURKE STREET PRECINCT CONSERVATION STUDYBUILDING IDENTIFICATION FORM__________________________________________________VICTORIAN HERITAGE INVENTORY H7822-1535c.1880s vacant site adjoining two storey row inhabited by Chinese.
