GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1991: DPeriod : Mid Victorian (1872-1873)Grantee : H Short 1852History- These row houses were built for Thomas Griffin in 1873, and he lived in 157 for one year before his own house was built next door. From 1885 until after 1895, James Griffin, possibly his son, was given as the owner. The tenants are a fairly typical group of North Melbourne residents being all small tradesmen, skilled workers and labourers, e.g. Thomas Carlyle, a brass founder; Samuel McDougall, a plumber; James Munro, an engine fitter and James Brown, a labourer.Description- Architects, Hennessy and Lalor, [The Argus 30 October 1872, page 7] designed this row of seven, single-fronted houses: originally (presumably) in stuccoed brick form, with transverse gable roof lines.Integrity - The verandahs have been rebuilt in a typical form, the stucco stripped and the bricks sand-blasted: providing an atypical finish for the period. Typical picket fences have been placed at the front.Streetscape - Contributive to the streetscape in form and general period detail.Significance - Architecturally, originally of a simple form and sincealtered: but contributive to the streetscape: of local importance.Historically, associated with an old resident of North Melbourne: of local interest.Recommendations - consider zoning provisions to maintain use and form.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1 RB 1873, 1670-75; RB 1875-76, 1710; RB 1885-86; 1708-1713; RB 1875-76 1707; RB 1880-81, 1681; 1890-91, 1717.2 The Argus 30/10/1872/7
