That was the case more of less before the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum opened in 1851. It looked more like a grand mansion, and it could be seen for miles across the newly-settles city. Back then there were so many needy and homeless people in the capital, that, even though the metropolis was only 15 years old, the asylum kept on having to build new wings.
