General notes:
Grading as at 1985 : CPeriod : Early Victorian (1861-62)Grantee : J Mahood 1853___________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNE.History- From its construction in 1861 until 1895, this stone house was owned by the family of James Lyall, a mason, who was presumably its builder. Thomas Lyall who is listed as owning the house by 1890, carried on the family business.Description- A single-fronted, parapetted basalt masonry façade with quoins and simple cornice built on the street alignment. Six pane sashes to the window (since replaced) and a single toplight to the door are the fenestration.Integrity - The basalt is painted and the door replaced.Streetscape - End of an isolated but significant early group"at the WreckynStreet corner consisting of the Edinburgh Castle Hotel, 58-6 Courtney Streetand a compatable 62-60 Courtney Street.Significance- - A simple expression of of classical elements in a material which was used for house wall construction for a relatively brief period in Victoria's history: of high regional significance. Historically, this falls with the small stone cottages of Dryburgh Street South in illustrating the early simple cottages of stonemasons and building contractors of the area. Similarly it is one of a relatively small number of small houses constructed of dressed basalt and sited on the building line, in the area and the state and services as evocation of early building standards: of regional significance.Recommendations - Remove paint from basalt, repaint joinery with original or typical colours;replace existing door with four-panel external door or oriqina1;consider zoning provisions to maintain residential use and form.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1. RB 1861-62, 1472; RB 1895-96, 943___________________________Notes 2024:It is at the end of an isolated but significant early group at the Wreckyn Street corner consisting of the Edinburgh Castle Hotel, 58-6 Courtney Street and several buildings now demolished.
