Grading as at 1985 : BPeriod : Mid VictorianGrantee : William Gidney 1865Built 1880___________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNE...History- The first owner, Mr Donovan, sold the house one year after its construction in 1880, to William Gidney a horse dealer. He and his wife owned the house until 1895 - 96 and she lived in it for most of that time, after which it was leased to William Rosling, another horse dealer. The Gidney family were all involved in the same business and owned properties on either side of 29 Canning Street. (Refer to 33 Canning Street, 23-27 Canning Street).(Graeme Butler Note 2024: as Gidney was the grantee- he was the first owner and perhaps Donovan was the builder?)The first shipment of Australian horses to India was in 1830, but regular exports did not commence until 1844. By the 1890's the total exports amounted to near one million pounds per annum. [Hutchison, Australian Encyclopedia (Lenden 1892) p 154]Isaac Gidney and his son, Harry, figured prominently in the Indian trade, Harry eventually becoming the 'most called on judge of light horses in all the Commonwealth' and by then, (1942) resident on his grazing property on the Broken River. [Peck "Memoirs of a stockman Melbourne 1942] They represent the most apparently successful members of this central business in North Melbourne's early commercial era and this is their earliest surviving urban home.Description- A hipped and slated roof polychrome brick villa, possessing a cast iron supported, concave roof verandah, with panelled frieze decoration, and dentillation attached. Cast iron pickets extent between the brick garden walls, at the frontage.Integrity - Generally originalStreetscape - One of the more austere parts of a richly decorated streetscape: all owned at one time or another by the same family.Significance- Architecturally, an original, but typical early villa contributing by its form period detail and materials, to a richly decorated streetscape of major importance, of regional importance. Historically, the only surviving house owned and occupied by the Gidney family in North Melbourne and it was the first in the streetscape developed by them, of regional importance..References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1.
